So you have been led to believe that sugar is a wonderful
source of energy and natural goodness? Do yourself a favor and
study everything related to this feature - and do so as though
your life depends on it - because your life really does depend
on it.
Before we continue, however, let's briefly consider an
article by The Ethical Co-op explaining how sugar is made.
"I remember an advert from childhood saying something like
"sugar is the natural one". Well, yes, if the definition of
"natural" includes bubbling sulphur dioxide through the cane
juice, spinning centrifugally to remove the outer coating, then
dissolving into a syrup with phosphoric acid and calcium
hydroxide, skimming off a layer, decolourising with activated
carbon, then concentrating and repeatedly crystallising in a
vacuum, producing white sugar. For brown sugar, some of the
waste washings are then added back to this to colour it."

"Sugar is a
constant. Its lack of perfection as a
food is total. On any scale of
nutrients, it would rate less than
zero." (William Dufty, Sugar Blues,

"The classic bestselling exposé that unmasks our generations
greatest medical killer - yet, at the same time, shows how a
revitalizing, sugar-free diet can not only change your life but
quite possibly save it . . . It's a prime ingredient in
countless substances that we eat and drink, from cereal to soup,
from cola to coffee. Consumed at the rate of over one hundred
pounds for every American every year, it's as addictive as
nicotine or heroin - and as poisonous, responsible for modern
plagues ranging from depression to coronary thrombosis. It's
sugar." Warner Books Inc. ISBN 0-446-34312-9
